From Morning Report, 7:21 am on 31 March 2022

The first shipment of a breakthrough antiviral pill to treat Covid-19 has landed and will be available for patients next week.

Sixty-thousand treatment courses of Paxlovid are set to be delivered before the end of the year, after the anti-viral was approved by Medsafe earlier in March.

The drug has been shown to reduce hospitalisation rates by up to 90 per cent, and has been touted by some international experts as the most significant breakthrough in the fight against Covid-19 since the vaccine.

Pfizer country medical director for Australia and New Zealand Dr Krishan Thiru spoke to Corin Dann.
