Police are working to identify the bodies of two people found by a member of the public on the shores of Lake Taupō this morning.
Locals have described a heavy police presence -- and tents set up by the water, as officers investigate the circumstances of the deaths.
Taupō Mayor, David Trewaviss, told RNZ reporter, Katie Todd, that the town has recently had an influx of visitors, and the location where the bodies were found is a popular walking spot.
