Applications are open for this year's Aroha String Quartet International Music Academy. The Academy, for string players and pianists, takes place in Wellington over six days in mid-July.

This will be the seventh Academy hosted by the Aroha Quartet. Chamber music ensembles are coached by the Quartet’s members and guest tutors; this year they'll include Donald Armstrong (NZSO Associate Concertmaster), cellist David Chickering, bassist Olexander Gunchenko  and pianist Tom McGrath.

Upbeat talked with the quartet's cellist Robert Ibell and Academy administrator Cathie McCallum to find out what goes on at the week-long Academy, and about the benefits of taking part in an intensive period of music making alongside time for relaxing and socialising.

ASQ International Music Academy takes place from 12-17 July at St Andrew's on The Terrace, Wellington. Applications close on 28 March.
