Around 400,000 people attended the festival which was originally scheduled for three days but ran for four.

The first Melbourne Cup was won by Archer, a horse from New South Wales. It is generally believed that the prize was £710, but it may have been £930. In 2015 the first prize was $3.6 million.

The first transplant was from a live donor - Ronald Herrick provided a kidney for his twin brother Richard. The surgery was performed by Dr. Joseph Murray and Dr. David Hume in 1954 at Brigham Hospital in Boston.
The same team of doctors did the first transplant from a deceased donor in 1962. The first lung was in 1963 and a liver in 1967. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant in 1967.
